Scary Anime, Anyone? 17 Animes to Watch (for Free) This Halloween Week

Oh holy crap, it's Halloween week! Hopefully you have time to go enjoy yourself some safe spooky events, like staying at home and watching scary anime. May I make a few unsolicited suggestions?

  1. Another (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/GR09X52WR/Another)—People often describe this as a horror anime. It's really hard to do "horror" in anime "right", and this is more like "horror lite". But it's enjoyable nonetheless.
  2. Attack on Titan (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/GR751KNZY/Attack-on-Titan (S1–4)), https://tubitv.com/series/2318/attack-on-titan-subtitled (S1))—I'd be a fool if I thought you needed me to explain what this series is about. It's based on a manga with an intense storyline (and some pretty mediocre artwork...). It's about titans and they really need to be attacked.
  3. DEATH NOTE (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/G6QWD3EE6/Death-Note, https://tubitv.com/series/1630/death-note)—It's about a notebook that can cause death. It's 37 episodes though, so it's a time investment. There was a phenomenal U.S. live-action adaptation. Check it out on Netflix if you want to feel waves of sadness and giggles come over you at the same time.
  4. ERASED (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/GYGG92K7Y/ERASED)—Short and sweet, about a young girl who gets kidnapped and murdered. (OK, not at all sweet, but it is pretty short.) Based on a manga of the same name, it also had live-action movie and TV series adaptations.
  5. Jin-Roh (https://tubitv.com/movies/345782/jin-roh-subtitled)—I FREAKIN' LOVE THIS MOVIE. Politics and intrigue, wrapped up in The Little Red Riding Hood story. There was a Korean live-action film adaptation that was pretty but was potentially meh. You be the judge.
  6. JUNI TAISEN : ZODIAC WAR (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/G6K51X9GY/JUNI-TAISENZODIAC-WAR)—OK, hear me out. I'm not so sure either why I'm telling you to watch this anime, but it's got some cool characters and the voice actors are pretty spectacular.
  7. Kamisama Dolls (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/G649PQNWY/Kamisama-Dolls)—Actually, the manga is a bit more interesting... though there's enough fan service-ish moments to get you through the series, perhaps. Too bad fan service really doesn't do it for me.
  8. Junji Ito Collection (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/G68V4NDJ6/Junji-Ito-Collection)—They don't call him the Master of (Manga/Anime) Horror for no reason, folks. None of the stories are technically terribly scary, but they do leave you thinking about them... Months later my partner and I are still like, "Hey, remember that one Junji Ito episode when...?" Plus it's got a beautiful ED that I want you all to hear.
  9. Paranoia Agent (https://www.funimation.com/shows/paranoia-agent/)—They don't call him the Master of Anime for no reason, folks. (OK, actually I'm the one calling him that, but I think others might agree.) Lightheartedly disturbing, this is the only TV series from Master of Anime KON Satoshi. To think he's not making anime anymore breaks my heart.
  10. THE PROMISED NEVERLAND (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/GYVD2K1WY/THE-PROMISED-NEVERLAND)—Look, the setup alone is scary. But one might argue that the real horror is this live-action film adaptation of the original manga: https://the-promised-neverland-movie.jp/
  11. PSYCHO-PASS (https://tubitv.com/series/2271/psycho-pass)—It's more thriller than horror, but boy it's pretty good. Not really for the faint of heart.
  12. Saga of Tanya the Evil (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/GR9P57W96/Saga-of-Tanya-the-Evil)—It's got a great setup and some solid character development. It's also pretty funny.
  13. Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World) (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/GR2P51V8R/Shin-Sekai-Yori-From-the-New-World)—I admit the manga gets more at the shock and horror, but the anime isn't half bad. It just kind of leaves you unsatisfied.
  14. SSSS.GRIDMAN (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/GR8DMVXDR/SSSSGRIDMAN)—I'm not sure if this is horror or scary or thriller, but it does have the man I want to marry in my anime life, and it also is really sad and potentially a bit disturbing.
  15. Terror in Resonance (https://www.funimation.com/shows/terror-in-resonance/)—A classic by director WATANABE Shin'ichirō (of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, Carole & Tuesday, etc. fame). Plus a kick-ass ED by Aimer.
  16. Yamishibai (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/G6WEM1V36/Theatre-of-Darkness-Yamishibai)—These are scary! Well, at least some of them are. Just put them on when you're brushing your teeth or something, and you'll be brushing your teeth for very a long time.
  17. YUKI YUNA IS A HERO (https://beta.crunchyroll.com/series/G69P3XG1Y/YUKI-YUNA-IS-A-HERO)—This is like a poor person's Madoka, but actually I found this series to be a little bit more gut-wrenching. Like it's just sad. And a little horrific.

I know I'm leaving a bunch of things off (like Higurashi and stuff), but I hope these titles give you a place to start...

Happy Halloween!!
